    Fran Cort at computer

Fran Cort is a self-described “jack of all trades” administrative assistant for Fairhill Partners, a partner organization of Greater Cleveland Volunteers. If there is a job to be done there, Fran is probably doing it today – or will initiate a new process tomorrow.

A former Assistant Dean of Professional and International Management at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management, Fran was bored after two weeks of retirement. An active person by nature, Fran needed structure. She began volunteering at Fairhill over 13 years ago and has not stopped as it continues to be “a perfect match.”

The nonprofit Fairhill Partners connects people to opportunities for lifelong learning, intergenerational relationships and successful aging.

Fran walks to Fairhill five days a week and works from 9 until noon. She calls her list of duties “fluid” and the hours fly by. It is impressive: she works the front desk meeting and greeting people, answers the phone, does billing, manages marketing projects, constructs the activity guide, schedules activities, designs web pages, trains new volunteers, and orders supplies. Fran sees the need for something to get done, then goes and does it.

Fairhill Partners is a place where Fran’s career skills have translated perfectly to her retirement passion.

A key motivating factor for Fran is the unexpected amount of creativity she’s found with the staff and volunteers. “If you are interested, always want to be stimulated, always want to be creative, want to be able to set your own schedule and want to work with wonderful people, Fairhill Partners is the place to volunteer.”

    • How do I sign up to volunteer?
    • Answer:

The easiest way to sign up is either to enroll online, or complete the pdf enrollment form (found here), print it off, sign it and submit to our office. You may also attend one of our upcoming Information Sessions. If you prefer, you can also call our office at 216-391-9500 to speak to one of our staff members to learn about possible volunteer opportunities.

    • How long before I can volunteer?
    • Answer:

Our staff can refer you to an ongoing opportunity once we find out a little more about your skills, interests and availability. Completing our enrollment form is the most effective way for us to gather this information. Most of our partner agencies have an intake process in place that may include an application; interview; reference checks; background check; orientation and training. Depending on the type of opportunity available, this process can take 2 weeks, and may take up to 3 months.

You may find a special event volunteer opportunity a great way to get started while you undergo the intake process for one of our partner agencies.

    • Are background checks required?
    • Answer:

Most nonprofit agencies have some sort of screening process in place for potential volunteers. This process may include reference checks, social security traces and/or criminal background checks.

It is best practice in the volunteer management field to conduct criminal background checks for potential volunteers, especially if the volunteer will be working with a vulnerable population (children; the elderly or those with disabilities).

Not all criminal convictions will exclude you from volunteering; it is based on each agencies' policy and the type of crime.

    • I have court ordered community service to do.
    • Answer:

We recommend that individuals with court ordered community service consult our special events calendar. Please review the calendar to see if there are enough opportunities available by the deadline for your requirement. If so, please contact the staff member listed.

    • I am under age 18. My family would like to volunteer together. Can you help me?
    • Answer:

Our agency works with volunteers, aged 18 and over. Some agencies do allow families to volunteer together or have youth volunteering programs. Some of these agencies include: nursing homes; hospitals; some arts & cultural institutions. We recommend you contact them directly. Some of our special event opportunities also allow families to volunteer together. Feel free to contact our office for additional information.
