A new year brings with it optimism and the promise of renewed hope in our community. Greater Cleveland Volunteers is committed to expanding our impact through attracting more volunteers and signing up additional partner agencies. In addition to the numerous events we place volunteers at, we have many opportunities in long-term areas such as hunger, healthcare, fighting loneliness in older adults, and childhood literacy.
The AARP Foundation Experience Corps is focused on improving reading skills in kids in Grades 1-3. Reading at grade level will benefit the students throughout their schooling. As the saying goes, up to third grade, students are learning to read. After that, they’re reading to learn. And if they don’t have those skills, they’ll be at a lifelong disadvantage.
Experience Corps is looking for volunteers, age 50 or better, who are ready to give back to their community, and want to make a lasting difference in a child’s life. As an Experience Corps tutor, you’ll receive comprehensive training, and meet with your assigned students twice a week during the school year. These half-hour tutoring sessions not only serve to boost the child’s reading skills, but in many cases, increase their self-esteem and confidence levels.
Volunteering doesn’t just help the student. The Experience Corps tutors benefit as well. Numerous studies have shown the rewards and advantages of volunteering, from feeling a connection to the community, to the intrinsic fulfilment that comes from helping someone else.
